Attract The Best Birds

Thank you for feeding wild birds!

Pine Siskin

This winter is expected to be one of the biggest flight years for finches in Eastern Canada since 2020–2021. Poor seed crops across the eastern boreal forest—from central Quebec to Manitoba—are driving species like Redpolls, Purple Finches, Pine Siskins, and Evening Grosbeaks southward in search of food. In contrast, strong cone crops in New England, the Maritimes, and parts of western Canada will hold some birds, but many will continue moving toward feeders. Purple Finches and Red-breasted Nuthatches have already been expanding south since mid-August, and Pine Grosbeaks, Evening Grosbeaks, and Blue Jays are expected to follow.

Pro Tip: Place feeders in sheltered areas to help birds conserve energy, especially during windy conditions. In fall, chickadees begin caching seeds for winter, while juncos and white-throated sparrows often return to northern yards after summering farther north. Autumn is also a great time to observe mixed flocks as they migrate—making it a rewarding season for birdwatchers. Come back soon—there’s always something new to learn and save!
